Toronto, Ontario—[May 13, 2013] – In response to the segment on bullying: “Bullied Girl Back to Class But With Her Mother” aired on Monday, May 13th at 5:30pm, Bruno LoGreco Author and Master Life Coach claims “What you may think is protecting your child, can actually do more harm than good.” From a life skills perspective, Jill Trahan-Hardy becoming a body guard and chaperone for her daughter at school has long-term consequences on Harley’s overall personal development.
At 11 years old, children are going through a special developmental stage that is essential for building self-confidence and trust in their abilities to deal with life situations, specifically bullying. Life skills and self-efficacy are developed when a child takes initiative to deal with oncoming situations regardless of the severity. If these opportunities are taken away, the long-term consequences include: low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, and high self-doubt. These can lead to eating disorders, chronic depression, low self-worth, and continuous feelings of insecurity in adulthood.
To remedy this situation, the solution is to teach Harley life skills so she can walk to school with her head held high and feeling confident that she can take care of herself and this situation even if she is facing abuse or assault from the bullies. It is also necessary to teach her mom how to support Harley through this situation so they both feel empowered with strategies and tools for long-term success.
